- Faust was born as the magical, worldly, evil hero of a classical German folk tale, extremely successful in the fertile and transformative valley of literature, but dissatisfied with his life, so he made a deal with Satan and exchanged his soul for unlimited knowledge. He has turned into a tragic scholar. The legend of Faust has formed the basis of many works of literature, art, cinema and music that have reinterpreted it throughout the ages. The adjective Faust and Faustian implies a situation in which an ambitious person renounces his moral integrity in order to achieve power and success for a certain period. The story was popularized in England by Christopher Marlowe, who classically addressed it in his play The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, and two hundred years later it became, in the hands of Goethe, the universal epic of an unsatisfied intellectual who, with his ultimate spiritual salvation, also pushed the boundaries of tragedy. Famous Faust commentator Erich Trunz summarized Goethe's work very well in this context:There is a longing in Faust to transcend the boundaries of his own self; but this longing does not lead him to the religious sphere he originally desired, but rather rushes, takes wrong steps, confuses the sublime and the humiliated, and thus becomes even more deeply immersed in the earthly. This is exactly why Faust's helplessness becomes particularly palpable where he tries to reach the superhuman. In fact, his lack of limits and the resulting helplessness led him to make a covenant with Satan. This is the issue that determined all the drama until Faust's death. Show more
