Biographical & Autofiction Editorial Review
Self-Portraits: Stories presents a captivating collection of semi-autobiographical short stories by Osamu Dazai, renowned for his unique voice in modern Japanese literature. Each vignette offers an intimate glimpse into Dazai's life, capturing the contradictions that defined him: both entertaining and serious, humorous yet tragic. The adept translation by Ralph M. McCarthy anthologizes stories chronologically, providing context through an informative introduction and 22 evocative photographs. Readers will appreciate the balance between Dazai's wit and profound self-reflection, encapsulated in this engaging read that appeals to both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
