Renogy Energy Controllers Editorial Review
The Renogy Rover charge controller is a popular choice among users for its compatibility with Lithium Ion batteries and capacity to charge 12V lithium batteries. The 40 amp model can be configured for 24v nominal input from the solar array to 12v nominal output to batteries. The load terminal for the device is about 27 VDC. The MPPT feature of the device helps detect low battery percentages and will shut off the inverter to prevent over discharge. Good customer support is one of the advantages of the device. However, the quality of the instructions is poor due to the tiny symbols for program indication, and the ports (located at the bottom) require the user to either lay the controller flat or look under and make a guess to insert cables properly. The device may experience quality control issues, including instances of receiving a previously returned or broken item, or in some instances, a dysfunctional controller. The device has a simple configuration with the BT-1 connection working perfectly. It is relatively easy to use and dependable. The plugs on the device are not secure, and one user cautioned potential buyers to watch the attached video. Furthermore, the Lithium mode of the device presents challenges when charging is obstructed by the BMS, and the device creates voltage spikes that shut down the inverter, leading to a loop of misery. Renogy support advised the user to replace a non-lithium battery instead of using a lithium battery.
